HYPNOSIS and its uses in the practice of hypnotherapy, is a rapidly emerging, highly effective science. It is a wonderful tool which can help in facilitating positive changes allowing people to tap into their fullest potential.Yet this therapeutic modality is plagued by misconceptions and misunderstandings. Before considering what hypnosis is, perhaps it would be appropriate to establish what it is not! Most hypnotherapists, on interviewing a new client, will ask such client what he or she thinks hypnosis is. Replies range from sleep, to unconsciousness, to surrender of mental powers and control, to magic, to voodoo. All are in error.
HYPNOSIS CANNOT BE SLEEP
Although hypnosis is very relaxing, the subject is fully aware of communication and is able to respond on request either verbally or by signal. Unconsciousness is not involved. A subject asked to make a specific movement will comply with the request unless it is objectionable, in which case there will be a refusal.
HYPNOSIS IS NOT MIND CONTROL
There is no surrender of mind or control. A person who does not want to be hypnotized cannot be hypnotized or be induced to say or do anything which violates personal standards of behavior or integrity. The person is in complete control at all times allowing themselves to enjoy the process or reject it. There is neither magic nor voodoo involved.
THERAPEUTIC HYPNOSIS IS NOT STAGE HYPNOSIS
Behaviors and actions seen on stage, film or television shows are for entertainment. A stage hypnotist will go through a selective process of picking specific subjects who are looking to have fun and be in the limelight. These might be the same type of people that would put a lamp shade on their head at a party for fun. They are subjects that are willing to participate, and their actions or behaviors are voluntary. They might seem to follow directions mindlessly but in reality they are in control at all times. They want to have fun, participate in the show, and are willing subjects.
WHO CAN BE HYPNOTIZED?
Can anyone be hypnotized? Yes. Amazingly so, without realizing it you are hypnotized many times a day-- driving your car, reading a book, watching TV.
Do you ever remember a time when you were driving, but don't remember how you got somewhere? You stopped at the stoplights, made your turns, but somehow your thoughts had drifted somewhere else during the drive and can't remember the details.
Or have you, or someone you know ever been so engrossed in a T.V. show and someone is calling your name and you don't hear them? Can you ever remember a time where you were so into a movie or book it was like you were actually there, even engaging your emotions? Well these are all forms of hypnotic states, which occur daily without even realizing it.
SO WHAT IS HYPNOSIS OR HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnosis, when used therapeutically is a powerful tool which can allow a person to heal & empower themselves by implementing positive, acceptable changes to their thoughts & behaviors easily and effectively. This is accomplished by a hypnotist, hypnotherapist being a guide, or during self-hypnosis. The subject is induced or self- induces into an altered state of consciousness or awareness, which will bypass the critical, analytical part of their conscious mind.
Positive acceptable suggestions are then given directly to the subconscious mind. By giving suggestions for change in this altered state directly to the subconscious mind one can tap into their full potential easily, effortlessly achieving their desired goals.
